What you are describing has nothing to do with the laser or the chip, well not the chip in a sense. A lot of new DVD movies have what is called RCE protection built into the encoding of the movie. I think if I remember right it stands for Region Code Enhancement. I must first give you a little lesson on what the Infinity does to the PS2 in regards to playing DVD movies.

The infinity removes region codes from the PS2. Here in the US we are region 1, the UK is region 2 I believe and so on and so on. No region code is region 0. The Infinity makes the PS2 think its in region code 0 no matter were it’s from, thus allowing you to play DVD movies from any region. However there is a draw back to this. If the DVD movie is RCE protected the DVD its self will check if your DVD player (in your case your PS2) is the same region as the DVD your trying to play. If they don’t match you will get "This DVD was meant to be player on a region blah blah blah player" with the map of all the different regions. Now let’s say you backed up a DVD movie that was a region 1 disc originally and popped it in your PS2 with the Infinity installed and enabled to make it think it’s a region 0 PS2, the RCE protection will see that the regions don’t match. Hence region 0 doesn’t equal region 1. By the way this will happen with an original that has RCE protection also. So the only way to get around this would be to remove the RCE protection (which I don’t think can be done yet, but I do think you can change the RCE region not totally sure on that) or have a DVD player that you can set the region to what ever the RCE protection is looking for as its equal, or lastly if the DVD is RCE protected make sure it’s the same region as your PS2 originally was and disable the Infinity. This is where the Crystal Chip actually has a small advantage over the Infinity. In the BM of the CC chip there is what is referred to as "configurable RCE Region for advanced Region Control Enhancement fixing", meaning you can change your PS2’s region to whatever region you would like it to be. Thus when the RCE protection goes to check to make sure your PS2 is the same region as the player its being played on they will equal.

To make this a little more clear, this is only needed on DVD movies that have RCE protection. If it doesn’t have RCE protection a region 1-whatever DVD’s will play on a region 0 DVD player with out any problems.

And finally to add my own 2 cents……. WTF ARE YOU USING YOUR PS2 AS A DVD PLAYER FOR ANYWAY. If you don't know by now let me tell you that it’s not recommended to use your PS2 (or any console) as a DVD player. Why put the added labor of use on the poor weak ass laser. Save your PS2 for gaming and go by a cheap ass DVD player for $40 bones and when it fries the laser throw it out the window at the first car you see.
