I finished the game this past weekend... ran into a few other instances of the game crashing in certain points when using the v1.0 trainer, but I was able to make it past all of those points by turning the trainer off, playing to the next save point, and then restarting the trainer.
I'll try the other method, too. 
Definitely an awesome game. I had a lot of fun playing this one.
