I doubt sony engineered this defect, as I know of situations where the LA would fail even on un-modded consoles and only useing originals games. This is more likely just Sonys shotty manufacturing.
The LA clones that you speak of are "O.K" but there days you can get an original LA for not much more money and perform the Romeo mod to it while your replacing it.

NOT for the average modded/installer regardless of if you use the original LA or the clone.
