Info on RJ45 LAN Cable - CAT 5 Patch cable ? Please Help Someone

OK, I have my Broadband adapter but cannot get it to connect to my PC. I have a network card installed in the PC and am connecting it to my DC using a CAT 5 patch cable which is, I believe, a straight connection, that is, pin 1 on one end of the cable connects to pin 1 at the other and so on. problem is that the light on the network card doesn't light up when I have both machines on, indicating that the PC isn't getting the right echo to tell it that asomething else exists on the system.

In a response to a previous post I made on the subject, Xena said that I need a cross over cable. Is this different to the one I have and if so, how, is there a cross over of pin connections. Please advise me, and if appropriate, tell me what the pin connections should be so I can swap them around.

Thanks
