I autosaved the game on the 3rd level (after i shot the General and i'm trying to rendevous with the Helicopter). I've quit the game and started again, all I had was the shotgun (which you indeed shouldn't have this early in the game) and 1 magazine of bullets!

Just for the record:
I had a m4 with full ammo, a ak with full ammo, a aku with full ammo, a **** load of grenades. After restarting I only have a shotgun with 1 magazine ammo, haven't checked the nades though. But that doesn't really matter.
