i've had no crashes at all.

playing it on a P4 3.2 ghz with 1gb pc3200 ddr ram, and a Geforce 4 Ti4800 SE graphics card

the graphics card is a decent one, but its letting me down here as it came just before directx 9, so its an 8.1 card. this means that if i let Doom 3 auto detect the settings it puts it at 640x480 with all the frills turned off.

but i put it up to 1024x768 for now, with AA on, everything else on and to the max, and it runs excellently.

might still go looking for a new card though

and i did think it was all hype but had to try it anyway. the graphics *look* amazing, but its not a great game engine. theres little or no interactivity with the environment. bullets do not leave holes or make marks. you cant shoot glass. i for one would be happy if a game engine looked a little worse but acted a little better.
as for the gameplay... well the old Dooms were fun and addictive even though they consisted of shooting everything that moved. thats not enough for games these days, but sadly some games come out that are still like this (i was playing painkiller this morning, and thats the last time i'll ever play it)
so far i've found Doom 3 a bit linear but im still in the 'setting up the story' beginning part. i hope it will open out a bit later. however you cant beat the atmosphere. i love the little things like you will see some ammo in a corner and go to pick it up, without realising its not a corner but a corridor obscured by shadow, where a creature is waiting to hit you with a wrench!
and things drop down from ceilings, burst out from under stairs, all sorts of things. made me scream out loud a couple of times, so i've got to say its worth playing
