As far as the cable is concerned, you will need a new one regardless if it has been severly damaged. You could do a bypass but that is not recommended, as the replacement will be safer. In regard to that being the only thing wrong with it, there is one sure way to find out, just get the new cable. Caution is advised as to the amount of time and money you sink into it and weigh the risks of it not working.
A severed cable may not be the only problem but repair/replace is going to be required.
Do you have a secondary PS2 you can use the cable out of for testing purposes?
