What if they make the chips reflashable, more or so like the xbox? All xbox modchips come with bios that are meant to run linux, which don't even boot original xbox games. It contains no MS code, or even software to bypass securities. It also, however, allows you to flash the chip with another set of bios in case a new linux bios is released. This makes the chips completely legal to sell, since they don't do anything to copy protections. People then find the hacked xbox bios on the net and flash it themselves.
Could playstation chip creators do something the same? I mean, if not a legal set of bios, just blank? Then, sony argueing saying that the chip can be modified to play backups, won't hold up to well, since anything can be modified to do something that it's not supposed to do. It's like a person buying a cable box, then modding it to become a blackbox. A cable company can't stop cable box venders from selling them because it can be modified to get free cable.
