I Googled some info on tweaking lasers to read certain other discs (like CDR/RW) but I can't say I'm too happy doing it. Unless there is any other way other than taking the console apart and strengthening the lasers beam I don't want to go down that route
I guess I got unlucky and got a not-so-great-for-backups version of a Playstation.
