DC Hardware Gurus & CD-RW modders - help!

The screw pot-meter on my DC is ... well, screwed. It keeps slipping back and increasing the resistance. My question is: can I solder in a resistor at the DC's normal resistance (~700 ohms, I'll put it at ~650 to be sure) and if so, should I remove the old screw-meter or leave it in?
