In fact it is us guys who provide the explanations on the forum, and an answer we give now will be no better than one we have already given. So I'll keep my answers short in the expectation that you'll search the forum, digest what's there, build up your knowledge, try things out, and come back when you're genuinely stuck.

What is a patch? It is code that is patched into a game at a specific location to make the game conform to some purpose - like changing NTSC output to PAL, or defeating copy protection. Clever people work these patches out and give them away!
