Just a couple of ideas...
On the dvd side the burn speed problem could be due to the discs that you are using...a lot of the dvd/rw's do not support some of the cheaper media so will on burn at a reduced rate ..a firmware update on your unit my make it more acceptable to a wider range of media.But as a good guide stick to genuine Ritek brands..ie:- traxdada/ridata ....don't go for cheaper that say they use riteck dye.

The other thing to look at is your system resourses..ie processor power/ memory / and what programs are running in the background because is won't make a lot of difference if you've got a 8mb buffer on the drive if the processor and memory on the puter is over utilized.
