In theory that works, and did work for old protections (by reading in RAW mode).
Anyway, protection technology advanced and various techniques were developed such as in Safedisk 2 which caused many writers some problems - I'm not technically savvy in the working of this however.
Later protections used at the minute now use actual physical characteristics of the cd. With Securom 4.8x the spiral data track is different in a way that it takes the drive varying amounts of time to read certain sectors; this time varies over the disk and as a result, a graph showing this access time looks very irregular compared to a normal cd which has a smooth curve. (The Plextor Premium can get very close to replicating a Securom 4.8x disk perfectly)
So more often that not, copying the protections 1:1 is almost impossible and usually requires some sort or emulation or alteration.
