I think the only models that use R lasers are those with the R in the model number. The definative way to tell would be to look at the back of the laser. In my pic
here in between the laser pots you can see "400C" the R type laser i am guessing would have a number followed by R.
I think the mod to make an R type work in another console would be difficult because if I remember right they used a different cable.
