all lasers wear out eventually, the question is more on how much (hour wise) do you play your dreamcast, not necessarily the backups ruining the dreamcast.

if the disc is done right then you shouldn't have a problem.
if this is still confusing you then this is what i mean take two people

player one only plays originals but plays 100 hours of games a week
player two plays backups but uses his dreamcast only 50 hours a week

player one will wear his dc out faster, now i know that i have commented previously on this saying that the lasers will wear out but from experience now i can say that if the burn is correct and is dummied then you should decrease the search time for the laser therefore not really doing damage to the laser or the motor which drives it.
understand that lasers do wear out and you can't do anything about it.
they are rated on a per hour life expectancy

now don't take my word for gold it varies. ok,... so draw your own conclusions if you are hesitant about using backups then in my opinion don't use them, i am sure others would agree you are using these at your own risk....no guarantees
