No, they'll crash. And if you keep doing that they might get damaged. The only way to get a burning Athlon is if the heatsink falls of completely. Even if the fan stops working, the heatsink itself will spread enough heat to limit it to crashes. The point is that a P4 will even survive a heatsink that completely falls off, though your motherboard may not be too happy about 400-500 grams of aluminium and copper dropping on its components
