To test if your ps2 will play dvd-r is to make a dvd movie backup. Since movie backups dont require any modchips you can use your backup to test your ps2 and see if it reads dvdr.
As for what people think about the Magic 3.1. Most people in general think its crap. Get a Duo or Apple modchip.
