May I venture into this one?
When we see the DMS3 for v9 we'll know whether or not they have actually taken the clock off the chip and draw it from the PS2.
if they have, I believe that it should no longer be sensitive to the wires D & E being crossed etc.
When you clock at high speed (> 20MHz) then synchronisation, ground bounce and other factors all come into play. If you take the clock from the PS2 then it's only that wire and its characteristics you have to worry about.
