The last NHL Hockey I had was NHL 2002 (the one with Lemieux on the cover), and there WAS a German commentary (together with an accent-speaking american player, that was fun  ).

Yes, you're right, the last version with German commentary wasn't the 2001 but the 2002 one, since 2003 there is no German "play-by-play" anymore.
btw:
Rick Amann (the accent-speaking guy) is not an American, but a Canadian, who has German forefathers and played for several German ice hockey clubs.
