as a hi-fi installer in my spare time, I can highly recommend the Pioneer players. I've been runing a Pioneer DV-525 for over three years and i've never had a single problem with it - reliability and performance for a superb price (which was £300 at the time).

What is your budget? Do you have an external a/v amplifier or do you want on-board decoding of DTS/ Dolby Digital signals? what are you're output requirements?

If you simply want playback of a homebrew dvdr or backup dvdr then any modern Pioneer will do you proud.

Anyone looking to buy a player in the region of £200 I would recommend the Pioneer DV-565a.

hope that helps, cheeers
