most cds from this time period are "enhanced", if i remember correctly. sometimes they have a special data track after the audio, which contains a player with special features and other things on it. blink182's enema of the state had this.
i would try using EAC, available at
www.exactaudiocopy.de , if i recall correctly. i've used it to rip over 100 cds, protections or not. audiophiles swear by it.
