If you had enough cash to buy the tools to test everything that ihaveanosebleed just finished saying, then you are already pretty much as close to buying a new ps2. New ps2s only cost $179 US. Plus you wont have to worry about your new ps2 for a long time.
Another point is that, if you mess up doing what was said in the earlier posts you wont be able to get as much out of selling your used ps2. Just sell it as Biggie says and get a new one. No worries.
