This helps prevent a static discharge that could potentially ruin a part of the motherboard or the laser. If you change the laser you will find it is very simple. Once the DVD tray is out remove four large head screws. Then the bars that the laser is on will pull out. Take off the little white plastic arm off the old laser and put it on the new and slide that one on the rails. If you buy a new laser also make sure to desolder the points that should be connected for safety during travel.
