Do I have to be very quick and replace the game.dat right after the auto update was done?

I tried so many different ways, still I got an invalid cdkey.

Sorry about being unclear:
When the game starts on its own (after you see the notepad about the updates), this is when you need to exit and copy over the game.dat file

So basically it goes like this...

3) Click multiplayer -> online, and the patch will download. It will prompt you to exit the program to install the patch. Click ok and the game will quit and the update will install. A notepad with update information will pop up, and then the game will automatically start again.
4) Exit the game again
5) Replace the game.dat file with the one from the executable archive.

Then start the game and play all the multiplayer you want (until the next patch, of course!)

Again, sorry I wasn't clear about the order of events. Hope this works for you! (I'm still trying to find a valid serial so that I don't screw my friend out of online play)

Happy gaming (again!)
