I don't think its a laser calibration problem if u get the red screen.
If your laser needs recalibrating the ps2 will either
1. ignore the fact you have a disc in or
2. will come up with a read error message.
If you are getting a red screen you are either:
1. not using the correct booot method ( see top of this forum for boot methods ).
2. you are using a bad backup.
There is a simple way to do a basic test on your laser.
Get hold of a dvd video copied to dvdr. As the ps2 should play these without a mod chip try to boot it. If your laser ain't up to the job you will get one of the two replies above. If it plays okay then you know that your boooot method is wrong, your back-up doesn't work or the chip installation ain't working.

ps. I wouldn't suggest recalibrating yr laser without an oscilloscope and about 6 months of experience in doing it as it is very easy to fry your laser...
