Yeah, I checked, re-checked, double & triple checked the connections of the ribbon cable. It still doesn't work even with the r-mod out. I swear, every Sony product I buy is craptacular goodness(meaning-works great when it works).
I had a little trouble installing the r-mod initially(when I would shut the case, the cable would shift a hair and then the eject/reset buttons wouldn't work right). I put a small piece of tape on the back of the ribbon cable to help hold it in better. Worked great(unless that caused this problem somehow).
The thing that really gets me is it worked fine, and then it didn't. No sudden movements or anything. Just pushing(and holding) the eject button. Is there any way the r-mod could have fried something?
Now I am not sure what to do. The reason I didn't go with a M2 in the first place, is that my ps2 is a v4 and it has had the lazer problem with the blue bottom disks-so I don't know how much longer it would last. I actually had to send it in to Sony twice. Now my decisions are these:
1.) Figure out what chip to get, Messiah2, Magic 3.1 or wait until the 25th for that 3rd version one(forgot the name). Then buy a premodded system from somewhere(anybody know anywhere in the US?) or send a new one in for installation.
2.) Decide if the ol' v4 is worth sticking any money into to try and fix it ie:

Just don't know if it will help considering the way is just stopped working.
