I can't explain why there are a handful of verbatims that don't want to work on a few Playstation 1 games for me. It puzzles me too. I had the same theory as you Jay, about not changing your media unless you have too, many of my games are backed-up on verbatim cd-rs. However like I said above, there were about a dozen of psx games that got "frozen" at the beginning. I was using clone cd for 1:1 back-ups but this did not solve my problem. I was told that the ps2 was not completely backwards compatible with all psx games.
The cdr's that I have now, I reburnt the games that didn't work and they booted fine. I'm not trying to scare anyone away from verbatim, it is a very very good brand for the ps2 because of the high reflectivity of the disc, which makes it easier for the ps2 to read. I'm just saying that use what works best for you. Verbatims worked great for me...until I ran into a problem. My yamaha burner has a really powerful laser so I am able to burn at 44x and still produce a working back-up. Oh and make sure that your original is clean before you try to burn it!!
I can't find most of the media that Jay suggested in my area so here is my rating scale.
For Cd-R's it all depends on the PS2. My apple chipped ps2 plays just about anything. Really can't go wrong with verbatim though.
For DVD-R's, TDK is good, but expensive, try white label princo's. You can buy them online relatively cheap. Bg will agree that the WHITE label princos are good.
There is also a sticky at the beginning of this forum that charlie explains media issues. :-)
