I know that problem.
The only way for me to run the game (german version) is to use the german no-cd crack for version 1.01 while actually not having updated the game with the official patch. That solves some other problems, but i donīt have sound then. I, too, cannot go into the sound menu in the game.
So, knowing that using the crack for 1.01 while not having updated the game causes the exact problems you have, this might be the solution:
Make sure, you have updated the game. I donīt know about other localized versions of the game, but the official german patch is a dos-prompt which does not give you any feedback about whether the patching worked or not. So check the "last changed" date of your hitman2.exe before you replace it with the one from the executable archive (crack). I hope that was your problem!
