It sounds to me like the laser may be the culprit... Because of the fact you said, "It seems to work better when upright"
And all of the "noises" you are hearing is the laser trying to focus on the disc...
Try cleaning the laser with a cleaning disc (the ones with the little brushes on it).... See if that helps. If not you may need to get ahold of a new laser...
