Answer: Stay away from no solder chips if possible.
Get the Messiah 2.....Its the BEST there is!

Answer: I personally use the -R format.. If you have a newer PS2 you can probably get away with using either type....

Answer: Not with the Messiah 2. It direct boots everything on its own. No need for anything else.
