No, you don't need the cdrom in the drive, only if you want to hear the cd audio music in half life itself, otherwise it'll work perfectly without cd. I haven't tested blueshift though, that's standalone and MIGHT include a copy protection. I'm too tired right now to find out, but if you really need an answer I'll reinstall it tomorrow and check. zzzzzzzzzz....
