I have the same problem and have been trying to solve it ever since. But, I came across something... I think there's something wrong in the game itself or with the game in combination with Windows '98. I downloaded the demo yesterday and had the same problem:
Black screen showing up in 640 x 400 (I think), with an hourglass on it. Pressing enter/space/escape doesn't work, computer crashes and has to be reset, ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work.
So I think I'm not going to buy it either as there's most likely something wrong in the game or when it's running on Windows '98.
