I totally agree with your second argument: By not releasing the program(s) to the public, crackers may be able to continue crack the protection. Maybe that's why there are no cracking tuts on Securom New
The protection used to be quite "ugly" but still fully reversable. Too bad, it looks like Sony really try to piss us all off nowaday. I haven't really checked it out since they introduced the ATIP-crap.
