Don't waste your time with mod chips that require a gameshark....
Go ahead and get a direct boot chip.... Since your in the US I would suggest getting a Magic 2.....
Then ship your PS2 to Bill @ Freedomlives.com and let him do the install(He's in Chicago)..... I beleive its only about $60.00 for him to install it....(Alot cheaper that damaging your PS2 and having to buy a new one).
NOTE: Unless you are a VERY EXPERIENCED solderer I would HIGHLY suggest not trying the install yourself....
