Charlie for one has posted a great deal of info on this over a number of months and you could learn a lot setting side some time looking back over previous posts.
It would be well worth it.
What i've picked up along the way is this.
Basically it's a question of reflectivity, the better the reflectivity of the media being used the less strain on the laser.
Spending a bit more on good quality media eg, VERBATIM cdr and
TRAXDATA dvd-r is worth the price.
Because.
1, the laser issue allready mentioned.
2, you'll have less coasters which not only prevents wasting money but just as importantly to me it prevents wasting time
pissing about trying to get a good backup and maybe even thinking something else is wrong when trying to do so.
Using a lens cleaner say once a week is also a recomendation
that comes from the guys who know and there not too expensive.
