If you got Older modchip for PS1 then patching is a must for cetain games..If you don't like patching then Gameshark is your only other option..
All Ps1 games are maximum of 625 megs from what I've seen..
Unless there are some games I haven't seen..
Nero supports Overburn and Yes you need to make sure the CD burner supports it..From what I understand only Certain DC games are required for Over burn..
For PS1 and PS2 CD games no more than 625 megs and Ps2 DVD rips are usually under 700 megs..
