The Longest Journey ENG 4-CD edition (Build 142) Backup/Win7 32-bit fix
1 Attachment(s)
The English 4-CD edition (Build 142) of the game does not install on Windows 7 32-bit.
This is most probably caused by the copy protection routine, which uses 16-bit windows executables (namely Setup.exe and Mainx01.exe located in the root folder of CD #1). Here is a replacement Setup.exe (InstallShield installer taken from the Lemmings Revolution CD) that can be used instead. To create a Windows 7 working CD #1: 1. Copy ALL files & folders from CD #1 to a temporary folder (e.g. C:\TEMP), EXCEPT Setup.exe and the hidden folder Zzxzz (this folder contains the unreadable file Zzz.aze, a dummy file and possibly part of the copy protection). 2. Copy the provided replacement Setup.exe in the temporary folder. 3. Using a CD authoring program (e.g. ImgBurn, UltraISO etc), create an ISO image labeled TLJ_EN_1 and put there all files from the temporary folder. 4. Burn the ISO image with your favorite burning program (e.g. ImgBurn) or mount it on a Virtual Drive (using e.g. Daemon Tools). 5. Proceed with game installation. The installer will notify of a possible incompatibility with Win7 (supports only Win95/Win98), you can ignore this warning. Notes: - If the game autorun launcher fails to run, try some compatibility options. In any case, you can always launch the installation by running Setup.exe from the new working CD. - Do not use Win9X-ME compatibility options to run Setup.exe. This seems to cause the installer to fail. - Do not select to install DirectX 7. This seems to cause the installer to fail. - The Desktop/Start Menu shortcuts created by the game also point to an invalid win32 executable (launcher.exe). Instead, start the game by launching game.exe located inside the main game folder, using Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode. - On my system (GeForce 8800GTS 512, driver v280.26) anisotropic filtering seems to work with the game (not that you'll notice a difference in image quality) but antialiasing modes (2x...16xQ CSAA) cause "disappearing" of some 3D models and perspective-moving textures. |
