Canadian unit in the UK...
 

I live in the UK and was bought a Canadian PS3 by my inlaws. I still have a good number of UK PS1 and 2 games but the unit seems to dislike my UK region games and my PAL dvd's. I don't own any Bluray yet.

Anything I can do without having to rip every disc I want to watch?

I have the unit connected to a non HD projector by a standard monitor cable.

From my cursory searches on the internet and this site in particular I think the unit can handle both NTSC and PAL, just not on an old TV. So is it just a firmware jig needed to remove the region restrictions on the PS2 games?

Any advice would be appreciated.
