Beginner - Query Burning an .ISO
I have an .ISO which was created with Alcohol 120% and I am assured that it works.
I have tried burning it with Nero and Alcohol 120%. Both produce CDs that install but there is obviously some disk protection on them because they don't always run. I could understand if they didn't run at all but if I keep trying they will run. Sometimes it might be on 1st or 2nd attempt, others might be after 5 or so and sometimes I just give up. With Nero I just used the 'burn image' option. With Alcohol 120% I used the DAO+RAW option (just because it seemed to be the most used of the protected disk options). The Nero disk works more often than the Alcohol 120% one. The information is obviuously there because it does run sometimes - it's just that it can't be read reliably. I figure it's either down to (i) the way I'm buring the image (ii) the CD-Rs that I'm using (iii) or the CD Burner Other than that I'm stumped - Any ideas what I can check? Cheers, Nigel |
Neither the Nero software nor the ISO CD/DVD image format can be used to duplicate copy protected CD's/DVD's. (Find a list of backup guides in the PC Games forum FAQ.) Also, if you're using low-quality media (see http://digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm) and/or reading/writing the discs at a too high speed, the result won't work (reliably).

I tried the extra emulators on Alcohol 120% and used the CD that I had burnt previously.
With no emulators selected (and on a PC without Alcohol 120%) it runs now and then as described in my first post. With 'Emulate Sub Channel' selected it runs 100% of the time. Run out of CD-Rs so couldn't try last night. But this evening I will try burning with Alcohol 120% with 'sub channel' selected as burn mode. Let you know if that works. Cheers, Nigel |
whats the software then?, and who assured u it works...?

It's not a game - it's a Piano Tuition Software package (Adventus) that I bought for my 8 year old daughter to use with a midi keyboard.
It was quite expensive (best part of £100) so I was disappointed to find that it has to be in the CD drive to run the program. I've seen the state that some of my daughter's Barbie disks get in so I wanted a backup. A work colleague told me he could do this so I lent him the CD. He returned it with a copy which he assured me works. I tried it at home and found that it would only work erractically. I told my colleague and once again he confirmed it worked on his machine so this time he gave me the .iso so I could burn my own. I tried Nero first and got the same results (would only play sometimes). He had told me that he used Alcohol 120% (which I had never heard of) so I downloaded the trial and used it to burn a CD from his .iso - got the same results. I then discovered the Alcohol 120% emulation features (particularly the sub-channel). I shall speak to my colleague at work today - perhaps it was working on his machine because he has emulation on. Ideally, I want to make a backup that doesn't need Alcohol 120% to be installed. Cheers, Nigel |
the emulation settings in alcohol (and daemon tools too.. which is free for non commercial use.. it just cant burn.. only mount) are ONLY valid for burned disks... if the image was made using rmps then it does need alcohol/daemon installed on the system (iso is useless if it was protected, as image needs to be mds/mdf format) ...

Scan the game with Protection ID (see the forum sticky) and tell us the copy protection it uses. (Is this a game at all? We don't support applications!)

I prefer to use magiciso to burn iso file to cd and dvd. It works well for me.
