Quake 4 & Norton firewall

I've blocked the quake4.exe executable from connecting to the internet in norton personal firewall but quake seems to be able to contact the authorization server anyway. How come?

well, maybe norton personal firewall just isn't a good firewall (i don't know, i don't use it) ;)
but why would you want to block quake4 from contacting the auth server anyway?

The only reason you would want to do that is so that it doesnt check wether your copy is legal as its a famous thing about quake 4 and "scene released" versions.

Well, the point here is that the executable manages to connect to the internet even though I've told norton it can't have internet access. There are a lot of situations where you want to keep applications from accessing the internet (spyware, virus etc).

Therefore it interests me how the q4 exe manages to get a connection. If it can connect to the internet then other applications might as well.
