This cursed Ps2
Okay, I've modded a dozen PS2's in the last couple years and none have given me as much trouble as this one. This includes my very first which I sent to get repaired.
Here's the quick run down. My buddy has a v9, loans it to his girlfriend as a DVD player. I scream at him a bit, I romeo mod it, install a matrix infinity. Now it reads fine for about 2 weeks. He sends it back to me with a laser he ordered. Laser looks good, I install it. Now it wont' read freakin CD's and Any long FMV's skip. I'm like wtf, I try the old laser. exact same behaviour. Figure I must've botched the romeo somehow, like overheating the lachip. So install a new one. Same exact behaviour. I adjust the white pogs till FMV's and DVD's start playing fine. PSX games play great. PSX backups don't play at all. My brain is screaming. So I go to the pawn shop buy a used PS2, and I'm gonna put the chip in there. It's a v8. v8? Aren't those only like in taiwan? wtf? Plus it has the R type laser. So now I've got a new C laser and a used v7/8. What the hell am I supposed to do at this point? Mod the v7/8 (which I can't even find docs for) and buy the laser from him? Or should I just set fire to my desk and send him money for a new ps2? How reliable are the R-types? I might have to order a new one if this one is wonky. I mean it reads great right now but I don't want to go through all this crap again in six months. |

You need to check the laser pots with a multimeter to be sure there set in the "Safe zone". Then adjust from there. Some new lasers have a solder blob that must be removed as well. Just because your installing a new laser It doesnt mean it comes pre adjusted.

Try ajusting the angle of the laser. Fit new laser to mine and hade to ajust the angle, about 3 full turns (cannot remember if it was clockwise or anti clockwise)

...then I had to adjust it a bit more to get it to read the copied media properly... :) ;)
Hope it's still working A-OK mate :) |
Still all A-OK. Ace job well done.
