Question about backing up onto HD

I've checked out some stuff but I still have a few questions, and hopefully I can get some answers here.

First of all, is it possible to use an internal HD to back up games? Like by using the USB port or some such.

I have a slim version of the ps2, so if I cant use an internal, I suppose I would have to use an external HD? (i saw a program for that)

Basically im trying to figure out the cheapest way to back-up my ps2 games. I have a bad habit of leaving them sit out and getting scratched and such..

Little other info. I do have a DVD rom and a DVD burner, dual layer actually. So I dont know if just using CDs to back up would be easier.

You can back them up using almost any HD and most writer programs.
To play them you have quite a few options.

Can't resists - the cheapest way for you to protect them is to put them back in their cases :D

What I would like to find is a program or some such that would let me backup games onto the PC and play off the PC. Would make booting and such faster (or so ive heard) and make it a little easier when changing games. And of course when not handling the disks, there is less wear and tear.

There is currently no "good" solution for doing that, and really why would you want to when playing PS2 games is on the console it was designed for would be better.

Nazralte 23-01-2006 19:04

When I say play off the PC, I mean like how you would use the PS2 HDD.

Basically what im seeing is that I would need an external HD to backup my games, since i have a slim PS2. Which of course I dont have the money for..

Im trying to find alternatives.

IF you have a V14 slim your out of luck, but if you have a V12 or V13 have a look at this.

USB Extreme/Advance is compatible with about 3.9% off all PS2 games which is very low not to mention when booting from a USB HDD on the PS2 games actually play slower then from disc, but yes .... it is an option.

Nazralte 24-01-2006 06:37

Well...looks like thats out of the question.

So, I guess next option is to find a good disk swap program. Are there any that work without having to use a mod chip?

What im talking about is those Programs where you put the disk into the PS2, it boots up, then you swap it out for a back-up copy of the game.

Warlock 24-01-2006 16:04

You can buy the swap magic disc, A few games have compatability problems and some games require patching to load. If your ok with this then go for it but In the end your money will be better spent on a modchip.

Wtf?

3.9% could you provide a game list to back that up? (cough cough liar)
It's not as fast as an internal HD, but it's not slower than reading the disc

but hey believe what you want, least I'm not sellin em!

PS - I like the swap discs too!

And this makes you point more valid how? If anything this means once again you dont have the experience and thus once again proves your lack of knowledge.

Good night.

I do like that site, never bothered much with their compatibility list, as I find many of the games listed incompatible there should not be. Most of them there run hdloader_.7

PS2HD - -USBExtreme/USBAdvanced is actually an original application that is used to run games from a USB HD using the USB slot on the PS2. This method is slow but still worth checking out and the only method available for slim-lines that have not been modified to reinstate an IDE cable with HD-Connect.

There should be a newer version coming out soon.
Game Loading Speeds
HD 3 sec - 4 sec
USB 6 sec - 7 sec

Take into account hard drive types and seek times. An IMB would be faster than a seagate, but cost you an arm and a leg. I think they also will do data recovery for free until your warranty is up.
Seeing as how even some games on the usb have to be run under a slower mode for compatibility issues, I cannot agree it's slower than the dvd drive. Also take into account dvdr backup load speeds,

Bottom line, if you have a slim you're not gonna win any races with hd seek times unless you mod your console, personally I don't care to do that. You want an internal that badly? Trade models with one of your friends that has the older fat Ps2 model, problem solved!

Thats about the most accurate of all your comments and one I can agree with. Weather or not you "like" www.ps2hd.com their list is the most accurate and up-to-date and continually being contributed to. USB extreme/advance with out a doubt is very incompatible with PS2 games. HDD seek speed has nothing to do with it. I guess you dont realize that the USB ports on the PS2 are USB 1.1 and not 2.0 like some are mislead into believing. USB1.1 data transfer rates are not as good as data transfer rates from the DVD rom its self, disagree with that if you like but its fact.

If this supposed "new" version ever comes out the only thing they should concentrate on is their poor compatibly with games. Load speeds could be tolerated if compatibility was higher.

well..point (yet again) spedmetal. simpletonsnake--he knows ALOT more than you. deal w/ that and stop turning every thread into an argument that will end up embarrassing you. back to the topic, Nazralte--i started w/ the swap disc crap too and trust me its NOT worth the headache. dont mess with that, dont mess with the slide key or flip top garbage...none of that. send it out, miss it for a week or so, then love the shit out of it when you get it back. theres alot of different options out there, but i can guarantee you will never say " i shouldnt have got that mod put in"
