hdd's acting up

hey i have a maxtor.., its now outta warranty
whenever i boot it.. it works fine
then after about 5-7 hours
it just makes all these noises then like
it freezes
and freezes my computer
is it a problem with the hard drive?
what do i do?
would formatting it help?

Sounds like its going down the tubes fast brotha..
If you reboot does it do it again in the same amount of time? Or does it take a little while to come back to life.
Sounds like its physically going to crap.. I've had a couple that made clicking and buzzing noises.. The disc barely turned at all inside of em.. I'd start backing my crap up now if I were you to be safe. Then run it into the ground.

so is my baby gonna die no matter what?

HD's die, just like us. They have a life.

BUT

After 5hrs is pretty weird, everything else in your system ok, take of the side casing, and when it does it again.

Carefully touch the HD to see how warm it is, upto reasonably warm tis fine, hot to boiling well somethings up.

Also touch the side of your heatsink above your processor (the thing with the fan also :P) Make sure that isnt boiling, as it could be your CPU overheating which is causing the crash.

i tested the maxtor via the diagnostic test and it said tat it was all fine
so should i not be worried or anythin?
i just moved all my files onto anoter hdd
do u guys think its safe to retry the hdd?
or should i be cautious or somethin..
i put it inside a fan case thing just to watch over it

re hard drive

I wouldnt leave anything on it you cant afford to lose, did putting the fan on it make any differance?, try rebooting after say three hours to save locking system and damaging files on other harddrive, If it keeps happing and you can afford it , chuck it now to save grief later.

sounds to me like it could well be a heat problem

try getting a hdd cooler, or move the hdd next to a fan to try to cool it down

way ahead of ya
i have it on an hdd cooler
im gonna wait alil while then use it again
i successfully got the files off it though :)
