NEWBIE need help modding :D

Please someone help me with softmodding my gamecube, because I know little about this and I've searched google multiple times but haven't found good help. From what I've seen I've decided that I want to go the GCOS 1.4 method w/action replay and a nintendo memcard 59. What do I need to do exactly to get this softmod to work and what software will I need? I've heard that you can make it so you boot GCOS 1.4 off the memory card rather than connecting to the computer through PSO everytime, and I would like to know how. I'm trying to do this with the least amount of money possible :D. Is a GC network adapter absolutely necessary and do I need PSO to get it to the card? If so, how would I do this? I have little modding experience, but I do have some (from my xbox :D) so I think I can pull this off if someone points me in the right direction.
