is this too radical?

i have just got into this ftp backup iso etc thing and am a little tadpole with a big idea. I am really impressed with all that you all figure out. After reading about backups and about installing new drives on your Xbox i immediately thought could it be possible to install a DVD writer into a Xbox and could something like Nero be adapted to work on an xbox. Therefore you could copy game to hard drive then write it back on to a blank whilst in the xbox  You dont have to reply and totally confuse me, its more as a posting to get the brains out there ticking over and tackle the issue. I'm sure someone will come up with a solution soon. Would be interested in any of your thoughts and just to see if anyone knows what i'm thinking

I remember reading a discussion about that at another forum quite some time ago. The fact was, that getting people to hook up a dvd-burner and creating burning software from scratch is a lot harder than setting up a PC connection and burning it with your PC. So I don't believe one will ever be made.

However, you may want to look into the linux xbox installers, as they might have some kind of software like that in the linux OS.

Ahead has a free version of nero for Linux. So if you connect a writer up maybe it could be possible.

I have my doubts that will work without any code additions. But one can always try.

I have also been thinking about this and from my pov the best solution should be some open source burner program so that it can be easily converted to the xbox. Only problem is to get someone with the knowledge to fix that, I can't program anything for the xbox (never tried to get into it, and the fact that XDK is pretty illegal for me to use....).

Time will tell, but I don't think it will ever happen to be honest... :(

dll files, bah. They'd all have to be open source and encoded directly into the xbe.

Well, I think that boxplorer or dvd2xbox might work. You can drag and drop the files you want from one drive to another. I don't have a dvd-r to test it though, so I'm just guessing.
Can anyone of you try it and post here his findings?

.....what do you mean? DVD readers are not the same as DVD writers. You can't drag and drop files into a read-only dvd-drive.
