Game creation Tools
Well, i have been poking around for some gfx engines for creating some games. I guess this post is for some that may want a future in game design.
gfx engines are Graphics only. They do not do physics, networking, etc... You could only create games like tetris, space invaders, checkers, and mostly puzzle type games that have minor collision detection if you don't implement everything else. Irrlicht gfx engine (free): Very nice for beginners. It has well documented tutorials for anyone that is new to programming all together. The gfx are similar to Quake 3, however, it supports some advance features like per pixel lighting, bump maps, and soon parallax mapping. Ogre gfx engine (free): Very advanced gfx engine. Supports most of the new stuff and many materials/shaders. Also supports bump maps and normal maps amongst MANY advanced features. You should download the examples and compile to get a more in depth look at what it can do. More or less, Doom 3 or Unreal Engine 3 gfx. Does water very well (very!), with collision (rain or objects) ripples. Similar to HL2 if you've played it. Though, this is far harder to code for compared to irrlicht. Feal free to ad anything else to this topic. I'm short of time so I will try to add more later. |
