Cold Fear - Official NoCD :)

Seems the Safedisc copy protection (or game code) on this game has caused some people to not be able to launch the game, so DarkWorks released a Safedisc free EXE for all you having this problem. Probably why people are bitching the Hoodlum release is bad :)

If you go to 3DGamers:

Code:

http://www.3dgamers.com/dlselect/games/coldfear/coldfear_retail_alt.zip.html
And download the file coldfear_retail_alt.zip from one of the mirror sites and replace the existing EXE with it (Unzip it first you n00b's) you won't need your DVD in the drive again to play!

NO, this is NOT AN APRIL FOOL!

cLoWnPoSs 03-04-2005 04:46

no way because of the refresh rate "out of range" , but thx any way. ;)

BarryB 03-04-2005 05:45

If you getting that message it's either your graphics card, drivers, monitor or the settings for one of them is higher than it should be. It's not the game itself!

I run the game in 1024x768 @ 100Hz on a GeForce 3 Ti200 64mb using 76.10 drivers and a Flatron 795FT 17" Monitor, no problems at all.

cLoWnPoSs 03-04-2005 06:55

I ve test it on my geforce 6800, on 17"LG, 17"CTX and 19"Hp with all the posibility of the refrech rate and on geforce Ti4200 so, but same problem, when i start the game the sceen become black, only sound can be heard.

Have checked the obvious thing, like the system requirements:
  • Supported OS: Windows® 2000/XP only
Processor: 1 GHz processor minimum, (2 GHz recommended)
RAM: 256MB RAM minimum, (512MB recommended)
Video Card: DirectX® 9 compliant 64MB (128MB recommended) see supported list*
    Sound Card: DirectX 9 compliant
DirectX Version: DirectX 9 included on disk
    DVD-ROM: 8X or better
    Hard Drive Space: 2.2 GB
Peripherals Supported: Mouse, keyboard, Windows compliant game pad.

Supported video cards at time of release:

    Nvidia® GeForce™ 3/4/FX/6 series (GeForce 4 MX not supported)
    ATI® Radeon® 8500/9000/X series
Also, have you:
1. Installed a Monitor inf file so windows knows what refresh rates/resolutions your monitor can run.
2. DirectX 9.0c installed.
3. Drivers at least 71.84 (official)
4. System/video not overclocked.

Is this your only game that does not run?

cLoWnPoSs 04-04-2005 04:39

system requirements are all right, only i don t have this monitor inf file. Yea it s the only one, never got the same prob whit other games. I think the crack wasen t good because too many gays said the same thing.

Can't you use the refresh rate overrides in the Nvidia drivers? You can use the coolbits reg hack or NVTweak to get it to appear. I set the most common resolutions to 100Hz for my monitor!

I have 640x480, 800x600, 1024x764 and 1152x864 all set to run at 100Hz in the refresh rate override and all games I've run work!

What's the max refresh rate your monitor can handle? Maybe set the refresh rate override to 60Hz and try again, if it works keep upping the refresh rate till it fails, you'll then know what refresh rate to use!

cLoWnPoSs 04-04-2005 12:35

I think that the crack was made on highest hertz or resolution or something like that because i ve tried it on tree diffrent monitors with all of the possibility no way. Just need to wait for a new realise. Thx any way. :)

BarryB 04-04-2005 19:50

The crack doesn't alter the resolution or refresh rate, no cracker would mess about with that!

Can't see how it runs at 'highest hertz' as I can set my refresh rate to 60Hz and run the game, then by going into the settings in my monitor I can see it's running at 60Hz. If I set the refresh rate to 100Hz and run the game, the settings in my monitor show 100Hz! So it's not the game setting the refresh rate, it runs at whatever your settings are.

Obviously you have something misconfigured in your system, otherwise you'd be able to run it! Only other thing is to mail Ubisoft and see if they have a solution!

cLoWnPoSs 05-04-2005 07:49

I ve test it on 2 diffrent PC, nothing happen, on the 1 one with XP P42.5GHz 1024 DDR and geforceTi4200 same thing, and mine Windows Server 2003 P43.0Ghz 1024 DDR and geforce 6800. Mail Ubisoft is a solution but i don t know they may gona ask me to deliver them a product key, i have the cracked version. So lets play Obscure. :)

Sweetsensation 06-05-2005 01:10

Have anybody found a solution für the problem with the black screen ?

If a start the game i hear the sound and see nothing.

00Eraser00 12-05-2005 08:00

Got it working
It was the refresh rate that my monitor couldn't handle
First try till what refresh rate your monitor is capable of. Do this by the Nvidia prog for example.
Set it to highest possible for your monitor.
If it still doesn't work do this:

To change the default refresh rate setting in Dxdiag:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type dxdiag.exe, and then click OK.
On the More Help tab, click Override.
Click Override Value, type a refresh rate setting in the Override Value box that is supported by both your video adapter and your monitor, and then click OK. Try one value at a time.

NOTE: Typical values are 60, 62, 72, and 75.
Click Exit.

In the override enter your highest capable refresh rate.
Now start the game again.

Sweetsensation 13-05-2005 04:35

I have found the solution for myself. It also was the refresh rate that my monitor couldn't handle.

I have changed the settings in my grafic card for 60 hzt fix for 1024 x 768 and the game runs perfectly.

By the way. I don`t understand why the programm runs without settings in 100 hzt. For the future i wish in many games that the settings can be changed before the user play the game.
