backups now taking forever??
hi, i got a nec nd-2500a. been running great with no probs. done plenty of backups using dvd decrypter and dvd shrink (latest versions) of both. i usually check for latest versions before i backup a dvd. got latest winxp updates too. it used to take me say 20-30 minutes or so to backup/burn dvd. about 1-2 weeks ago the last 5 dvd's have taken anywhere from 1-2 hrs to backup. in the last couple of weeks i have updated winxp updates (couple of security ones) and shrink had a new version too i installed, these are the only new programs that have been installed. also still using the same discs ive always used "Memorex DVD+R 8x" using nero oem 6.3.1.10
just curious if anyone else had noticed or had the same problems. |
Have you tried defragging the HD?

Lengthy Backups...
Why don't you download DVD 43? It takes almost no time at all. DVD Decryptor is good freeware, but it has always taken a long time whenvever I have used it. The tougher the ecrtyptions and copyright protections, the longer DVD DEcryptor takes. Some of the new Sony Arccos protection stuff is pretty awful. The lates versions of DVD 43 and DVD Shrink seem to work pretty good. I don't like Nero very much, so I broke down and bought Roxio and IT WORKS REAL GOOD! You can buy Any DVD and Clone DVD 2 or VOBblanker if you don't have the patience to wait for freeware to come up with decryption updates. It's up to you. Good luck.
Phil  P. S. DVD 43 is free and it works much better than DVD Decryptor. |
On Defragmenting...
I just saw Warlocks post right after I posted my last post! I defragment both of my hard drives regularly, and DVD Decryptor still takes a long time.

It still shouldnt take 1-2 hrs to do a backup.

Same Here
I have a Sony DRU-530A and suddenly am having the same problem as mentioned above. The ripping and shrinking is taking the same time as always. When I go to do the actual burn however it takes nearly an hour to complete. I have tried backing up several of my older movies that backed up fine before to test and encountered the same problem. No matter what movie I try to back up the length of the burn process is atrocious. BTW am using Ritek 8x DVD+r and burning at 4x, since my drive has always had problems with the 8x speed. Also the movies back up great, no problem watching them they just take four times as long.
|
Quick note to add to the above. I am using Nero and noticed the the buffer at the bottom is fluctuating rapidly. Going from somewhere around 76% to 3% and then back again quickly. This occurs during the entire burning process, but as mentioned before playback is not inhibited.

Not sure why this works but apparently it does, worked for mine anyway and several others. Go into your Device Manager and uninstall the IDE device containing your burner. Restart the computer, give XP time to reinstall it and you should be good to go.

Didn't work for me........
I tried your technique, and backups still take 1 1/2 to two hours. Any other suggestions???

Check your DMA settings - How ? do this -> Go to Control Panel> System> Hardware Tab> Device Manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers> Right Click Primary IDE channel (and Secondary IDE channel after you finish with Primary)> Properties> Advanced Settings Tab> Transfer Mode or click here to learn.
Do the above from both "Primary & Secondary IDE channels". I (We) and you need to look at whats in both "Transfer Mode" and "Current Transfer Mode". Screen shot below is what I'm talking about. http://img93.exs.cx/img93/187/dmacur...fermode3wi.png You can also look here for some other solutions: http://sniptools.com/vault/getting-b...windows-xp.htm If it is in "PIO" mode. Click the "Driver" tab, and uninstall the driver. Then reboot. Upon rebooting windows will automatically reinstall the driver and it should go back to "DMA" mode. http://img85.exs.cx/img85/9578/dmaun...lbutton4jc.png |
Burning Problems
I haven't checked this thread in a while. DVD Decryptor has always taken a while, but it never took 11/2 or 2 hours. I've had the best and fastest results with 1) DVD 43, 2) DVD Shrink, and 3) burning to disk with a free version of Nero--it came along with my DVD drive, but I've been told that this version is available for free on the Nero website . A friend of mine uses expensive programs like ANY DVD/Clone DVD 2 and VOB Blanker which works great--if you wait about 2 to 4 weeks, freeware updates (like DVD 43 and Shrink) will do the same things. Good luck.
P.S. My personal favorite for burning to disk is Roxio, but Nero works just as quickly--they both burn to disk in about 10 minutes (or less) once the movies have been decrypted (about 1 or 2 minutes) and encoded (about 15 to 20 minutes). |
Got a friend with this drive and had same problem, update your firmware to latest version should cure problem.
|
have you changed your dvd recently?some dvd's are really slow.i have the nec 2500A with he latest firmware never had a problem.
now my dad has the l dvd-ram 16x and it takes hours to copy. maybe it's the firmware as SparkySpark said |
I have been having a similair problem as well lately but mine is not with the actual burn time but more the encoding time. it reaches near 4hrs some times. I am using DVD shrink. any help on speeding this up would be greatly appreciated. :D

on dvd shrink (v 3.2) are you checking off deep analysis and AEC? that could be your longer times.
