Act of War:Direct War DVD9-to-DVD5 Conversion

hi folks.

this is my very first post here and i hope, i can do a favour to you all.

i just wanted to explain, how to turn the dvd9 version of aow to a working dvd5 version without wasting money for a dl dvd-/+r.

first of all, you need to download WinPack 2.31 (3.00b works also). extract it to a temp dir and let it remain here. then copy the whole dvd-content of the game into a temp dir too. now start up WinPack and do the following:

- select IS 6.0
- Load packed file and select data1.cab (a little msg appears, confirm with ok)

now you get the whole .cab content showed. scroll down till you get to Group 32. from this point begins the language content. now select the language you donīt prefer (e.g. french, italian, german,...) and click on "delete a group". a dox-cmd-box pops up and should do some work. when the box disappears and the group was deleted, you can proceed with the other "language groups" until you get the size to fit on a dvd5 recordable.

now you can burn the game down on a dvd-/r. and donīt forget the no-dvd !!!

in my case, iīve deleted the Italian, Spanish and French "language group". and thatīs the reason iīve done it all for:

i hope this will help.

have a nice day

Hmm..is there anyone else beside the Thread Starter who got this tip to work? I was about to buy a DVD+R DL disc but didn't cuz it was so expensive.

@Scaramonga
Um nice work on your conversion in the other thread but just for the record 'Leatherfac3' posted his 10 hours earlier than you!
Now we just need confirmation as to which one actually works correctly? ;)

P.S: Once other users establish which one works correctly I will ask it to be copied to the CD2DVD conversion thread and I will make a special note for it in the Index in Post #1.

this method was tested twice by me and a few friends of mine. all confirmed my conversion method as "working". maybe my method wasnīt so clearly delivered to your mind, so that your "doing" didnīt find to a good final. this method was tested on uk and german retail version.

and one little msg to scaramonga. i havenīt found any conversion manual for this game in the net. so i was going by myself. i feel sorry for you when you get pissed off by my conversion method.

:D :D :D

donīt mind. mine works too! ;) i just wanted to share my experience with the others to get this game down on a dvd5 recordable. of course i canīt give you any guarantees of success. i donīt even know, if thereīs a us-retail version with other stuff on it. and btw. i looked at your conversion method and i find it some kind of strange. youīre ripping more off of the game as you need to. itīs on everyoneīs personal belongings how to cut-off things to fit on a dvd5. but for itīs way too much.

Hi Friend's..!

Firstly i'd like to say I love this small proggy.! :)
What else i'd like to say is if I open the data1.cab file does this file
automaticly correspond with the remaining..!

Also Thank You For The Hint..! Keep It Up. :) :) :)

iīve heard from various ppl, that the ripping of the language content didnīt worked or ran into a crc failure during installation.

i would only recommend version 2.31 for doing it. if itīs still not working for you, do it the cmd line way. for me (and a lot other pals) it worked very nice and is still working. iīve tried to recreate the problem others have and i couldnīt find any information that iīve missed in my conversion manual.

just try the installation from the temp dir after youīve ripped stuff out before you waste a recordable!

I know this conversion is exactly a CD2DVD conversion but with some of the CD2DVD conversions if you install from the temp directory it will almost always work but once it is burned to a CD it will not! So sometimes just because it works from the temp directory doesnt mean it will work from the CD/DVD. Best to burn onto a RW to do the test. ;)

it really depends on the setup routine. every cd/dvd conversion i did with installshield routines ran 100% from a temp directory and on a silver. i just mentioned it, because a lot of ppl had problems after creating an .iso and than burned it directly. itīs just a hint before wasting a silver AND time! ;)

And what am I ripping off more than I need to??..........

I removed the language data (don't need that)

I removed the foreign Acrobat readers and manuals (why would I want that?)

I removed the foreign Video's (why on earth would I need them?)

I removed the foreign .txt files (no need for them!)

So how did I rip off more than i needed to??

I left the 'Directx' intact (probably don't need that either!)

I created another folder for 'patches' and added the 19Mb patch....

I really do not see whats been ripped out that should have been left???....
