Backin up PS2: -R or +R

What media should I use?

I have Verbatim 4x DVD+R - will it work?

bighap 02-12-2004 12:46

Probably, but you are better off using -r instead.

Maybe an analogy will help....

People don't seem to get this, so I will put it in simpler terms. Ok, +R media will work and -R media will work as well....BUT for better and longer laser life you are safer using -R media because it is easier for the laser to read it. Ok I will put it in terms like this:

Drinking a small cap full of bleach every day wont kill you outright, but eventually you WILL die from excessive chlorine levels in your blood.

Same thing with the lasers. The +R media wont kill your laser outright or even right away, but eventually (and we are talking months) your laser WILL die...and who wants that?

So just because you "can" burn with +R media does not imply that you "ought" burn with +R media.

of course it wont, i know a guy that survived drinking a half gallon of bleach, he was in a coma for 3 days after that but he still lived

Laser Burnout???

When reading the post what is meant by laser burnout? Is that by playing a movie burned on the +R media that will eventually burn out the laser on your dvd player or is that the laser on the DVD burner you are talking about?

snake2 03-03-2005 18:23

when the laser burns out the laser that reads the disc breaks and no longer will read discs

Need more info???

I am just wondering because I bought a 50 pack of Sony DVD+R media to back up some of my movies. They seem to work fine but since reading this thread I am a little concerned about watching the movies now. I have been searching and searching the net but this is the only site and thread I can find on this issue concerning +R media and laser burnout. Is the industry ignoring this issue due to marketing or does this laser burnout issue only apply to games copied on +R media due to the tracking of the lasers on ps2 machines?
